5-Minute Natural Makeup Routine

Happy 1st day of Spring! While it might not feel quite like it (currently raining here), I thought it would be good to show you a quick 5-minute makeup look that's Spring ready. If you're anything like me, you might have been deprived of the sun these past months and need add in some color. Not only is this quick, but gives you that natural and fresh look that says Spring to me.

STEP 1: FOUNDATION

While I'm not big on liquid foundation for everyday, I do love a pressed powder. My current favorite is by Portland brand, Alima Pure. It gives enough coverage for everyday and has nourishing rosehip in it. 

STEP 2: EYES

Nothing says awake like the eyes and I pay a little more attention here. W3ll People's Expressionist mascara gives your lashes a nice coat that still looks very natural. I'll usually do 2 coats for good measure. Then, I add their liquid eyeliner. Now for a natural makeup brand, I have to say I'm hooked on this eyeliner. The texture and brush make it so easy to apply. Does it stay on like a regular brand? No. It just becomes a tad faded if you wear it all day, but you'll still have eyeliner on. 

STEP 3: CHEEKS

Now here's where you're going to fake that color! Wake up that Winter skin with some bronzer. This is another one of W3ll People's star products and it's not just me who agrees. Allure gave it the seal of approval. Beside having clean ingredients, I love that it's a loose powder allowing you to use as much of it as you need. Whether you're lighter or darker, you can always build up the color for the desired glow. 

STEP 4: LIPS

I'm normally a lipstick gal, but recently picked up this new lipgloss by Kjaer Weis from Cos Bar and has made me fall back in love with lipglosses. It's not sticky and has just enough sheer color to punch up your lips.

3 Easy Steps to Transition Into Natural Beauty

When we think of skincare and makeup, our minds think of the beauty and appearance aspects. Both are completely valid. Who doesn't want to look their best? Except you might have heard that there's a lot of weird ingredients that beauty brands use and how all these ingredients can be absorbed into our skin impacting our health. I know, it's scary to think about. Sadly, the US doesn't regulate the beauty industry and there are way more ingredients banned in Europe than the US. So what can you do to take matters into your hands? After a year of detoxing my skincare and makeup I use, I found these three things made it easier to transition.

1. Think Dirty App

First off, get your mind out of the gutter. While it's a work in progress, this is the app you need to download ASAP! It has a database of thousands of products that you can enter by name or scan the SKU to give you a rating of how clean or dirty it is. Is every product in there? No! But you can submit the item for review. The best part is if something does rate dirty, it will give suggestions for cleaner options and breaks down the ingredients. Not going to lie, it's addicting and shocking.

2. Swap Your Deodorant

If there's one thing I wish everyone would swap, it would be their deodorant. Is it freaking hard (not to mention stinky)? ABSOLUTELY! But not only starting with the hardest swap in this whole natural beauty journey, it's the one I find extremely beneficial to our health. The reality is we are meant to sweat. That's healthy. It's normal. We have been conditioned into thinking we shouldn't sweat there. These conventional deodorants are just plugging up our pores and not allowing our bodies to detox. Deodorants are applied so closely to our lymphoids, which carry blood into our entire bloodstream, that it makes sense to try to use the most natural ingredients we can. If I can do it (girl with the worst armpits ever), you can do it. I shared my absolute favorite natural deodorant here.

3. Replace As You Run Out

Once you start scanning your items on Think Dirty, you might panic and want to throw everything out. That's normal. I just wouldn't encourage that. That will create overwhelm and that's not the goal here. So look at what you're running out of, do some research for alternatives and then toss and replace it. Repeat until you swap everything, which could take months. You might even shed some tears for your beloved item (or was that just me?) What can I say, but I get attached to products that have been working for a decade. Here are some of my go-to brands and places to shop:

This Green Beauty Line Smells Good Enough to Eat

Let me just say that it's been a battle to come to this point. Yes, this is a makeup post. But finding a brand that is doing it without all the harsh chemicals AND still giving you the results has been hard to come by. Don't let my sister know, but I kinda let her be the genie pig when I got her a few things for Christmas from 100% Pure. She ended up loving the stuff, so I got a few things for myself. And you know what? I.GET.IT. 

When you start learning about the stuff that goes into makeup and making the green switch, you learn that fragrance is big sign it's not natural. That means finding a lot of products that are natural BUT smell well let's just say like the earth. It's not always pretty. So one of the best things about 100% Pure is they've magically found ways to make all their makeup smell good without any added artificial fragrance. You guys I almost want to eat it-that's how good!

 

Maracuja Oil Mascara in Black Tea $25 

Don't ask me why I smelled this, but I did. Anyway, it does smell good. But besides that, I love that it actually gets the black color from black tea. Maracuja oil comes from passion fruit, which is full of fatty acids and is good hydration. I'm thinking this is why it smells good. It gives your lashes a dark coating and adds some volume. I wasn't sure how it would hold all day, but no issue there. 

Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream $25

Now this stuff is life. It's basically an espresso shot for your eyes. And yes you will want to eat it. It actually smells like something you'd find in a bakery. A little goes a long way, but you can say goodbye to puff under eyes. 

Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Lipstick in Calendula $29

One of the big things I've been trying so hard to replace is lipsticks and lip balms. The thing that I find with natural lip colors are them being either too sheer or don't feel quite right on. That's not the case here. They go on smoothly and have all the pigment I'm hoping for in a lipstick. The Calendula shade is a very pretty coral nude. I'm thinking about picking up this brownish nude.

W3ll People Review

bronzer // Universalist multi-stick

While I haven't been on this green beauty train very long, I have been slowly finding new brands to replace my beloved decade long favorites. This has been going at turtle pace if I'm being real. It's like breaking up with your longtime boyfriend who you wholeheartedly love and nothing is wrong, but you just know it's not going to work in the long run. Too dramatic? Maybe.

BUT after a lot of searching, I've found a brand that I feel really great about. Have you heard of W3ll People? Besides the minimal packaging (complete sucker here), they put equal focus on items being safe, non-toxic AND effective. A lot of concern with natural beauty lines is the fact of it actually going to work. Rest assured, the line is designed by an established makeup artist. It's even won a few Allure Beauty awards. Oh, and you can factor out the price. This line is reasonable ranging from $20-$30.

While I picked up three items (bronzer, universalist multi-stick, and mascara), I have just tried the mascara. It's verified safe in green beauty terms and won an Allure award, so best of both worlds. It's the perfect everyday mascara and will do another post with a full review. 

3 Drugstore Green Beauty Buys

The truth is that some very heavy stuff in my life has been going on to really waken my eyes to what products I'm using especially in the beauty department. Let me say it's daunting to learn about all the chemicals that are allowed to be put in makeup, nail polish, and perfume. It's also overwhelming to try to find beloved replacements or new clean beauty lines that you've never heard of to replace what you've come to love. Let me tell ya' I am not one to test out too many beauty products or change up my face. I roughly have 5 tried and true products in my makeup bag that have been with me for a decade. So after being sad and confused about what's safe and what actually works, I found a few lines at local drugstores that got me started in cleaning up my makeup bag.

1. Defy & Inspire Nail Polish - it's a line by the people who have it all-Target. They formulated it to be free the common 5 toxic ingredients and have names that are after your favorite T.V shows. I picked up Dynasty, a pinkish nude, that is reminiscent of Essie's Ballet Slippers or Barefoot and Topless. 

2. Burt's Bee - I think we've all heard of them for skincare, but the line has been expanding more and more with makeup. I've been hooked on their face wipes for sometime-super soft by the way. But found them to have great nude lipsticks that live up to my Mac and Nars go-to, only these are safer. Blush Basin and Suede Splash are the two I picked up. 

3. Pacifica - you'll find the line conveniently at most Targets, but healthier markets like Whole Foods and Spouts carry it too. It ranges from makeup, skincare, and perfume. And if you're a package junkie, it doesn't disappoint! One thing I knew I wanted a replacement for immediately was my perfume. Lots of chemicals go into making perfumes and one big red flag that has been noted is seeing anything that says fragrance you put down. The line has several roller ball perfumes that are around $12, so doesn't break the bank even to try. Tahitian Gardenia is a combination of Gardenia and Jasmine-totally up my alley!

My goal is definitely not to bring fear, but awareness. Just like what we put in our bodies, what we put on it can affect our health. I'm still learning about what makes a line green and ingredients to avoid, but plan on sharing more as I go. If you have any favorite green beauty lines you love, please share them.

Best Nude Lipsticks for Olive Skin

 It's not until recently that I've become a lipstick lover. I guess you can say I'm a late bloomer when it comes to makeup, but it's when I discovered the nude lipstick look it had my name a l l over that. And let's face it-not all nude lipsticks are the same! Now, let's toss in olive skin and it's been slightly trickier. I didn't want anything that was lighter than my actual skin color and these 3 definitely pass the test.

 This was my very first introduction to nudes. Shanghai Spice has a peachy, coral hint to it and has sheer coverage. Sometimes I layer it on top of my third pick, Nars in Barbara.

 Let's be real almost errrybody and there mom probably has heard about Velvet Teddy, but it's great on olive skin. It's not too light and not too dark. And call me crazy but it has a coconut smell to it that I'm perfectly okay with.

Oh, Barbara! Nars lipstick in Barbara subtle difference but my go-to for everyday when I want a little difference from my natural lip color. I would say this one you do need to play up the eyes more or you can look washed out.

Glo Minerals Pop Gloss Review

I'm just going to come clean. I love lipgloss more than lipstick. Don't get me wrong I have slowly become a lipstick fan, but lipgloss has been my go-to since middle school and got me through those adolescent years;)  So when glo minerals asked me to try out their holiday collection of pop glosses I couldn't resist! The collection comes with four colors-pueblo, taffy, flamingo, and plumberry. Not going to lie, looking at flamingo and plumberry had me terrified just looking at the tubes.
